faq'S

A smudge pot, also known as an orchard heater, is a heating device that uses oil-based fuels to create high radiant heat due to its unique design, originally developed in the early 1900’s. Today, these heaters are commonly used for camping or outdoor gatherings where firewood is less available or less efficient.

Kerosene, diesel, or Jet A-1. Used vegetable oil or motor oils are sometime used, although a cleaner fuel is recommended.

Tank capacity is up to 8 gallons and will burn approximately 1-3 hours per gallon depending on several factors including fuel type, amount of regulated air flow, and elevation.

The tank is filled at the fill port located under the regulator cap. It is imperative that the tank ONLY be filled when the smudge pot is cool.

Close the carburetor (or regulator) to the fully closed position (no open holes) and place the lid on top of the chimney. Monitor the smudge pot to ensure the flame has extinguished and the unit begins to cool down.

First, extinguish the fire as described in FAQ “How do I extinguish the fire on the smudge pot?”. Be sure to let the smudge pot cool down completely where it is safe to the touch. Then, remove the regulator cap and refill the tank to desired level. Recommended level is a minimum of 5 gallons for a longer burn.
