About the Role

The Director of Marketing and Communications is the head of the Communications Team within the Development Department at IM. This position is primarily responsible for creating communications and marketing strategy for the organization and managing all internal and external communications, and marketing opportunities. The Director is responsible for communications to a wide range of stakeholders, including but not limited to: employees, donors, traditional and social media, community leaders, public officials, and the general public. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer and works closely with the Development and Program Departments as well as with the CEO.

This position requires self-motivation and the ability to work independently, while coordinating multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Creativity, strategic thinking, a proactive approach to internal and external communications, excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, and a high degree of accountability is required.

Main Responsibilities

  • Create, develop, and oversee the organization’s annual internal and external communications/marketing/ media strategy and advance the organization’s brand in the community, positioning IM as a top-tier organization in the Greater Houston market. 
  • Lead IM’s brand study, in collaboration with the marketing committee and executive leadership, and implement the resulting recommendations, which may include a brand refresh or rebrand. This will likely involve working with outside consultants and/or contractors. 
  • Manage a third-party contractor to execute a website redesign. 
  • Supervise 2 full-time communications staff and 1 part-time staff. 
  • Create and/or approve select printed materials and written communications, both internally and externally, including printed newsletter(s), marketing materials, social media posts, press releases and annual report. 
  • Promote the organization’s message through all media platforms including website and social media. 
  • Act as the organization’s liaison and spokesperson to media outlets and maximize media relationships and opportunities. 
  • Meet the marketing needs of IM’s program departments. 
  • Build and maintain a portfolio of relationships with identified media contacts. 
  • Support IM fundraising events through creation of marketing timelines, promotion, and printed material oversight. 
  • Available on holidays, evenings, and weekends when necessary. 
  • Participates in other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • 10+ years of experience in marketing and communications.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, WordPress and PowerPoint. Familiarity with major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Knowledge of Blackbaud Luminate, Mail Chimp, or equivalent CMS software, highly desirable. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of graphic design software a plus. 
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and adapt to change.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, assisting and call on team members as necessary.
  • Valid Driver’s license and auto liability insurance as required by law.
